Xcel Energy said it is working to hire more military Veterans to strengthen its workforce.
The company said it has a goal of ensuring Veterans make up at least 10% of all new hires in Texas and New Mexico.
Xcel Energy said hiring and keeping more Veterans will move their company forward, especially since military training lends job skills which match the needs of electric utility work.
So far this year, more than 10% of Xcel’s new hires are military Veterans and Veterans make up nearly 10% of all of Xcel employees.
The company markets itself to Veterans with job fairs, actively recruits Veterans, and offers them help with resumes.
Xcel Energy Spokesperson Wes Reeves said Veterans make great employees because in the event of an outage, or something requiring a quick fix, the organization and work ethic of Veterans comes in handy.
“Veteran employees are a real easy, kind of low-hanging fruit in many ways because they’re highly trained,” said Reeves. “Many of them have already trained in some of the work, for instance, that we need them to do…We’ve always had a lot of Veterans working for the company, but we’re just making the concerted effort now to go out and find these folks where they are.”
Xcel Energy participates in more than 35 job fairs that specifically target military veterans and active reservists in the Texas and New Mexico service territory.
Reeves said while people tend to think about military Veterans more in the month of November because of Veterans Day, and all of the events meant to honor Veterans, Xcel is trying to hire more Veterans year-round.
He said Xcel Energy has been recognized as a “Military Friendly Employer” by G.I. Jobs magazine for eight years.
Two years ago,14% of Xcel’s new hires were military Veterans.
Reeves said while Xcel Energy is focused on hiring more Veterans, they are also trying to keep them by offering services and keeping them plugged into the local community.
