West Texas A&M needed both games to get it done, but at the end of the day, the Buffaloes were the 2016 Lone Star Conference Tournament champs after beating Angelo State 4-2 in a winner-take-all championship game Saturday in San Angelo.
Kyle Tinius made his first start of the season for WT and rewarded head coach Matt Vanderburg with an absolute gem, throwing 8 2/3 innings, allowing just two runs and striking out seven. Brooks Trujillo came in to get the final out and seal the Buffs win.
“They’ve played their butts off for me all year,” WTAMU head coach Matt Vanderburg said. “They’ve done a great job, they just competed. You know Kyle Tinius that’s his first start of the year. He’s been our closer and actually got the save in game one so just an unbelievable team effort from our guys. I’m so proud of the way they played and just got to give all of the credit to those guys.”
With the win, WT clinches an automatic birth into the NCAA South Regional.
