The sinking of the USS Indianapolis is the worst naval disaster in American history and the last living survivor from the State of Texas is coming home.

Cleatus Lebow, 94, attended a reunion in Indiana and is returning home to the Texas Panhandle.

The Indianapolis was struck by torpedoes from a Japanese submarine back in 1945.

The sailors were left in shark-infested waters with no lifeboats, food, or water.

Only slightly more than 300 survived, out of the 1,000 on board.

Lebow says he’s just lucky enough to get to come home.

“They know I like it and I do too, but I don’t claim to be anyone’s hero,” said Lebow. “I’m just another sailor that is lucky enough to get to come home.”

The community celebrated his homecoming this evening at the Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport.
