Update – Man Commits Suicide During SWAT Standoff

Amarillo Police have released more information on this morning’s SWAT standoff that ended in the man taking his own life.

Officials say at 12:25 a.m., 

Amarillo Police responded to a welfare check request on the 4400 block of Tiffani of a possibly suicidal male, age 45. 

When officers arrived, they were able to make contact with the subject who was armed with a handgun. 

SWAT and Negotiators were called and Negotiators talked to him for several hours but the subject refused to exit his home. No other people were in the house with him. APD and Randall County robots were deployed to aid in negotiating and keep the subject contained. The male stopped talking to Negotiators and eventually SWAT entered the residence and located the subject deceased with a self inflicted gunshot wound to the upper body. 

APD Special Crimes is investigating. 

Next of kin has been notified.
