The Texas Department of Transportation’s Amarillo District is recognizing National Work Zone Awareness Week, April 3-7. The initiative urges drivers to be attentive and adhere to posted traffic signs in work zones.
Local law enforcement and TxDOT representatives helped launch the Work Zone Awareness campaign aimed at reducing crashes and fatalities in work zones.
In 2016, work zone crashes increased 15 percent statewide, resulting in a 27-percent increase in fatalities.
In Amarillo, there were 176 crashes in work zones in 2016, resulting in no fatalities and 3 serious injuries. Zero fatalities is great news, but we can never overemphasize caution.
