Transgender people no longer to be classified as “mentally ill”

According to agency officials voting to change health guidelines, the world health organization will no longer categorize transgender people as having a “mental disorder.”

The United Nations hopes this will have positive changes in the acceptance of transgender people across the planet.

The organization uses the term “gender incongruence” to describe transgender people meaning their gender is different than what they were assigned at the time of birth.

“gender incongruence” will now appear under the sexual health chapter instead of under “mental disorders.”

UN members countries will need to adopt this new classification by January 1st, 2022.
