Boot Scooters, Bronc Busters, Jerky, Long Haulers and Sod Poodles.
They all sound like the makings of a popular country song but it’s what Amarillo’s new professional baseball team could be called this fall.
After more than 3,000 entries in Amarillo Professional Baseball’s “Name the Team” sweepstakes, it was narrowed down to those five names by those involved in the competition.
The President and GM of Amarillo’s Professional Baseball said there were several factors that lead us to this point:
- What it means to Amarillo
- Family Friendly
- Input from the team and the owners
But I know you’re probably still asking yourself why?
Here’s the breakdown and the connection they made to the Yellow City:
List of Finalists in Alphabetical Order:
Amarillo Boot Scooters
The Boot Scooters combines Amarillo’s genuine welcoming attitude with its fun western heritage.
Amarillo Bronc Busters
Amarillo has deep cowboy roots and the Bronc Busters honors the community’s resilient, independent spirit.
Commemorating its famous cattle drive, there’s only one region that can lay claim to the “Beef Capital of the World.”
Amarillo Long Haulers
Long Haulers celebrates Amarillo’s famous Route 66, open roads, wind-bent trees, and the fun of Minor League Baseball.
Amarillo Sod Poodles
A pioneer’s nickname for “Prairie Dogs,” this fun-loving local animal is very aggressive in protecting its family and home.
“There’s some unique names in there. But that’s what a lot of people chose to input those names and they met the criteria. Yeah I love the passion, I love the passion people are showing for the process good or bad we love that,” said Tony Ensor, President and General Manager of Amarillo Professional Baseball.
Much of that passion has been expressed online, not only on Facebook but through an online petition as well.
At last check, it has more than 2,800 signatures requesting for another five finalist names.
When asked if negative backlash will cause a redo of the process, Ensor told us no.
Ensor said he wants people to understand, this isn’t the major leagues.
He said minor league team names are usually more fun and light-hearted like:
- The El Paso Chihuahuas
- The Hartford Yard Goats
- The Montgomery Biscuits
The winning name will be revealed at a press conference this fall.
Fans can access the voting page by going to the team’s website at AmarilloProBaseball.com and clicking on the “Fan Voting” graphic.
The voting will run until June 13, giving fans two weeks to vote on their favorite team name.
