A new study reveals infants under the age of 12 months are most at risk of serious physical abuse.
British researchers looked at nearly 15,000 cases of severe injuries in children who spent at least three days in the hospital.
While only five percent of injuries were caused by abuse, nearly all of them were under the age of five and three quarters were younger than a year old.
Compared with children whose injuries were accidental, the injuries of abused children were more severe and tended to involve the head or brain.
Children who were abused were three times more likely to die from their injuries than those who suffered other types of trauma.
