An NBC News poll finds young people are more generous at tipping even when the service is subpar.
About two in ten surveyed and aged 18 to 24 say they would tip 20 percent or more for indifferent service and 62 percent are willing to tip at least 15 percent.
That was the highest of any age group.
Overall, nearly 40 percent of those polled said they tip 15 percent to wait staff even when service is substandard.
Some high-end restaurants and national chain Joe’s Crab Shack are experimenting with ending the practice of tipping.
