Tiger Found in Abandoned Texas Home

It’s not something you see every day

A 1,000-pound tiger found inside of a garage at an abandoned home.

It was inside of a rickety cage by someone who went to the home, to smoke marijuana according to police.

Houston Police Dept. Sgt. Jason Alderete says, “A concerned citizen called 311, they were trying to get into this house to smoke marijuana. We questioned them as to whether they were actually under the effects of the drugs or they actually saw a tiger. They say a tiger in this building, this vacant house, that’s obviously been abandoned for some time. Somebody has been feeding the tiger There’s several packages of meat.”

Once officers arrived and saw the animal the challenge was to get it out.

First, they tranquilized the tiger and they brought in a wrecker to help get the large cat out

Meanwhile, a crowd gathered to watch it all.

“I was shocked, we were coming from my sister’s and we were like oh my God, we were texting.”

“I couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe they would have something like that in there.”

Once the wrecker got the tiger out of a driveway it was loaded onto a trailer where it will be taken to BARC.

Division Manager for BARC, City of Houston Jarrad Mears says, “The animal was in a tiny garage, completely dark, smelled like urine, deplorable conditions. The animal was really thirsty so we were able to give it some water and so that was a good thing. We’ll get it back to BARC and figure out what tigers eat.”

BARC has been in communication with the county, working to find a place to take the tiger.
