FREESTONE COUNTY, TX - UPDATE: The Navarro County Office of Emergency Management tweeted just before 9pm to report the suspect from the shooting, Darbrett Black, was in custody. 

Police in Waller County say the suspect who shot and killed a DPS trooper in Freestone County was engaged in a shooting with deputies Thursday.

The Waller County Sheriff’s office said in a Facebook Post that the suspect, Darbrett Black, drove into the county and “shots have been fired in the area of Liendo Parkway and Wyatt Chapel.”

A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper was shot and killed in Freestone County, the Navarro County Office of Emergency Management confirmed in a tweet Thursday afternoon.

KXAS reports it happened about 4 p.m. south of Fairfield on Interstate 45, citing Navarro County EMS.

Authorities say the gunman is Darbrett Black, who is currently at large. Freestone County is about 90 minutes southeast of Dallas.

The suspect is a black male, 5-foot-11 inches tall and weighs 175 pounds.

He left the scene driving a gray Chevrolet Malibu, license plate number JDN4273, according to KXAS. Officials urge anyone who sees this man to contact law enforcement and do not approach him.
