Tech Training Wheels: Toys Go Digital


(NBC News) Young kids are often reaching for a parent’s smartphone or tablet long before they’re ready for a grown-up device.

“Toy companies are creating cool devices teaching kids early tech literacy kind of getting them ready for those devices in a kid-appropriate way,” says The Toy Insider’s Marissa DiBartolo.

A kid-friendly tablet is an easy starter gadget. Many are under $100 dollars and come with a protective casing for clumsy hands. Amazon and Samsung make kid-friendly versions of their tablets. 

Kurio offers a tablet, a camera device, and even a kid-friendly smartwatch.

“It connects via Bluetooth to a parent’s smart device which is great,” DiBartolo says. “There are over 20 apps and games, even an activity tracker built in there.”
