Suspect Dead Following SWAT Situation in East Amarillo



At 8:42 p.m. last night, APD was called to a burglary in process at the Overnight RV park on the 900 block of S. Lakeside.

According to police, the caller said he returned to his RV and found a man standing inside holding a gun. The caller, who police said was also armed, was able to disarm the suspect.

Officials said that’s when the suspect went to another room int he RV, where more firearms were located, which is when the caller exited the RV and called the police.

When officers arrived, they said they heard a commotion inside the RV and saw the suspect armed with a gun. 

Police said the suspect refused to disarm himself or leave the RV, and went to the door and pointed the firearm at officers.

Officials told us an officer to fired at the suspect who retreated back inside the RV and that the suspect began firing rounds at officers.

At 9:09 p.m., the APD Critical Incident Response Team was called in to assist.

Officials said the suspect continued to fire the weapon while APD SWAT and Negotiators arrived. APD said chemical irritant was deployed into the trailer in an attempt to get the suspect out.

At 9:48 p.m., officers told us they saw the suspect lighting a fire inside the RV, which became fully engulfed. Officials said while the fire was burning, they heard multiple rounds of ammunition going off. 

The fire was put out by the Amarillo Fire Department just after 10 p.m.

APD told us the suspect was found dead inside of the RV and has not been identified at this time. An autopsy has been ordered. 

No officers were injured during the incident. The officer involved will be placed on administrative leave.

The incident is under investigation by the APD Special Crimes Unit and the Texas Rangers.


The Amarillo Police Department Critical Incident Response Team is responding to an RV park on the 900 block of S. Lakeside.

According to APD, shots have been fired from inside of an RV at the location.

Officials said traffic has been blocked on Lakeside between SW 3rd Ave. and I-40.
