Rescue Road: One Man, Thirty Thousand Dogs, and a Million Miles on the Last Hope Highway by Peter Zheutlin is the AMARILLO READS selection for this autumn!  Rescue Road is the story of Greg Mahle, operator of a dog rescue transport service who travels through Florida, Louisiana, and Texas every other week-transporting unwanted dogs from the South to forever homes in the North.  Author Peter Zheutlin became interested in Mahle’s story when his own family adopted a rescue dog that was brought to them by Mahle’s company, Rescue Road Trips.  Zheutlin traveled with Mahle across the country, observing rescue operations and meeting volunteers who work tirelessly to save the lives of southern dogs by finding them homes in the north.

It’s All Going to the Dogs!
Amarillo Public Library locations will serve as drop off points for donations to help Amarillo Animal Management & Welfare and the Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society care for the animals in their custody. You can drop off Clorox Bleach (yes, it has to be Clorox), laundry soap, dryer sheets, paper towels, and soft dog treats at any Amarillo Public Library location.  Donations of clean, gently used towels, blankets, sheets, and pet crates will also be accepted.  Please do not donate dog food, pillows or pet toys.Doantions will be accepted now through Saturday, October 8 at all Amarillo Public Library locations.
 
Rescue Pet Photo Gallery
Learn the stories of stray or rescued animals who found forever homes. You can even submit your own photos!  Just email them-along with a brief story about how the pet came into your life-to Cynthia.Hunt@amarillolibrary.org. Open through Monday, October 11th at the Downtown Library, 413 SE 4th.

Meet the author of Rescue Road and the rescue transporter who inspired the book!  Book Signing will follow.
That’s Tuesday, October 4th, 7 p.m. at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts, 500 S Buchanan.
 
Adopt-a-Thon with Panhandle Paws of Hope
Join us for dog-themed activities and meet some great pets who would love to be part of your family!  We’re delighted to welcome as a special guest, Tugg, the Bull Terrier, star of the comic book series, Tugg: a Hero Among Us! It’s happening Saturday, October 8th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Northwest Branch Library, 6100 W 9th.
