When you hear jazz music drifting down Polk Street, you know Esquire Jazz Club is open.
Opening the club has been a dream for seven years for the local owner, Patrick Swindell.
"I've got a seven-piece jazz band that plays around for that many years, plus some, and I just felt Amarillo needed a place like this," Swindell said.
The old Woolworth building is home to the Esquire Jazz Club, but that's not the only thing that's special about the building.
"I'm a bankruptcy lawyer and I practiced law in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in this building for more than 25 years. When they moved out about two years ago and moved back into the Federal Building, this space became available," Swindell explained.
When you walk around Esquire, you can see portions of the court. The judge's bench has been turned into the bar. The witness said is now a sound booth. Plus, law books can be found just about everywhere.
The name, "Esquire" is also important to Swindell.
"The name is Esquire, which is a title given to lawyers frequently. and just kind of the art deco style of this architecture of this building that was reminiscent of the old Esquire movie theater in Amarillo years ago when I was growing up here," Swindell said.
The club is for adults 21 years old and older.
