Helping parents in the downsizing process can be tricky business. Parents have often been in the house for some time and have an emotional attachment to the property.Jan McCreary-Allen, owner of Smooth Transitions West Texas has some advice on how to help your parents downsize the right way.
Her tips include:
– Document their wishes now
– Formulate a plan
– Let them know they are not going to be able to take it all
– Talk with parents to see what items they want family to have and put names on the back of the items so there’s no confusion later
– Hire a senior move manager if help is needed, they’re neutral
– Remember it’s a process of letting go
– Move while the senior is in charge of the decisions
– Attitude is everything
