Yesterday more than 300 competitors headed to Palo Duro Canyon for some messy fun at Marc and Blue’s Magnificent Mud Run.
Proceeds from the run, going to Snack Pak 4 Kids, and kicking off the group’s fundraising efforts.
Dyron Howell, the founder of Snack Pak 4 Kids says, “That will be a good jump start to what we’re trying to do. And then we had some other proceeds, that have already come in for summer and so we’re probably about 400 kids away from being totally funded for the summer. We started out with 1,500 needing sponsor, so we’re much closer than we have been for sure.”
But when it comes to actually packing the bags of food during the summer, Snack Pak will hand off the torch to the Maverick Club.
Howell says, “Last summer, Maverick called us and said, ‘ We want to get our kids involved. We want our kids to come and volunteer.’ So every other Tuesday last summer the kids that are a part of the Maverick Boy’s and Girl’s Club came here, they packed bags, they assembled all of the bags. Of course, that work that they did then helped over 1,500 every weekend in the summer last year.”
One thing about the maverick club packing bags, they never know exactly who they’re helping.
Howell says, “They may be serving themselves, they may be serving others at the Maverick. I think what’s great is, is that its anonymous, but at the same time what we find is our kids actually want to give back. They want to serve. I mean, you see that in our high schools, you see that in our middle schools with our models.”
Howell says they are two more opportunities before summer starts to get involved and volunteer to pack bags on Tuesday nights.
