Sexting Scammer Poses as Sheriff

(WPBN) Michigan’s Crawford County Sheriff’s Office would like to let the public know about a scam where callers are posing as police officers.

Sheriff Kirk Wakefield says that the callers are reported to be impersonating police officers and demanding money to prevent the victim from being charged with criminal sexual conduct.

In an incident on May 9, a caller posed as Sheriff Wakefield contacted 21-year-old Gaylord resident T.J. Vantil, demanding that he pay him with a cash card or green dot card to keep the sheriff from filing charges on the individual for receiving pictures on his phone of the sheriff’s underage daughter.

Vantil says the caller wanted a $40 money card then $100 money cards every Friday.

“Its scary,” he said. “It’s really scary.”

Sheriff Wakefield said the victim did receive unidentified sexually explicit pictures on their phone as well as the threat of filing charges if the victim didn’t pay immediately.
