When a parent serves in the military, the whole family serves, that’s why Military Appreciation Month is always special at Sesame Workshop.
Sesame Workshop has been serving military families, their kids, and their communities with research-based content since 2006.
Today, there are more than 700,000 active duty and reserve-component military children under the age of five; Sesame Street for Military Families creates videos, activities, and articles that are specifically tailored to help young families deal with the unique challenges of military life, all available for free on SesameStreetforMilitaryFamilies.org.
In the past, the initiative has tackled topics like deployments and homecomings, frequent relocation, the transition to civilian life, and even grief and loss. The newest resources cover:
-Family Health and Wellness: Live-action videos, coloring pages, and tips for parents about staying healthy and strong in body and mind as a family. Includes age-appropriate mindfulness techniques, guidance on building healthy habits, and a soothing digital activity called Comfy Cozy Nest that teaches kids to imagine safe spaces.
-Birthdays: Advice and activities to help families start new traditions and create memorable birthday moments even when everyone can’t be together. Includes printable party games, tips for celebrating on a budget, and more.
-For Providers: Three-step guides to help healthcare professionals like pediatricians and social workers understand the military family experience around tough topics like deployment, homecoming, and relocation.
