Serial Second Chance: Syed Gets New Trial

(WBAL) After spending 16 year behind bars for killing his former high school girlfriend, Adnan Syed was granted another chance at freedom on Thursday by a judge in Baltimore, Maryland.

The now 34-year-old Syed was recently the focus of a popular podcast called “Serial” in which Executive Producer Sarah Koenig explored the circumstances surrounding his conviction.

Syed was convicted in 2000 of murdering Hae Min Lee a year earlier, and burying her in a shallow grave in a park in northwest Baltimore.

“It’s just remarkable, it’s so difficult to overturn a conviction on appeal after appeal,” said the attorney who represented Syed at his first bond hearing, Doug Colbert.

Syed was originally sentenced to life in prison for the crime, and many point to the podcast’s notoriety as a contributing factor in securing the new trial.
