A controversial organization in Amarillo is now considered a hate group.
“Repent Amarillo” was recently added to the Southern Poverty Law Center’s list of hate groups.
There are nearly 900-hate groups identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
They’re divided into different categories ranging from racial bigotry to religious hate.
Repent Amarillo is in the category of “General Hate.”
The SPLC says groups under this heading espouse a variety of hateful doctrines.
“Repent Amarillo” is a religious group that has been in operation for nearly a decade.
The group and its leader David Grisham first came to light when they protested an alleged swingers club in town.
Grisham says his group’s addition to the “hate list” is purely political.
Repent Amarillo Founder David Grisham said, “The reason we’re on it and the reason the American Family Association is on it is because of the things we oppose. And it goes against the Southern Poverty Law Center politically. This is more of a political hit list than it is a hate list.”
Grisham says if Jesus were around today the SPLC would list him as a hate group.
The Southern Poverty Law Center was not available for comment today.
But, on their website they claim these groups’ opposition to anything is not why they’re on the hate list but,
because of the misinformation they allegedly disseminate.
Here’s one example. This is from Tim Wildmon of the American Family Association four years ago. He said “[Islam] Is, in fact, a religion of war, violence, intolerance, and physical persecution of non-muslims.”
“Repent Amarillo” has made similar claims. They in fact say every mosque in American should be on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s hate group list.
The Southern Poverty Law Center was founded in 1971 as a defender of civil rights.
