Turns out, doing the time might not stop the crime.
This according to a new study published in the journal “Nature Human Behavior” Monday.
Researchers discover prison time doesn’t actually deter future crimes.
Using data from more than 100,000 cases, scientists find no correlation between having served a prison sentence and committing acts of violence after release.
However, repeat offenses dropped by about 10 percent among criminals who were sent to prison rather than given probation.
Experts say the findings suggest imprisonment is not an effective way to prevent violence and reveals a need to reform the country’s criminal justice system.
