The Amarillo Police Department is hosting the Amarillo Emergency Services yearly banquet for volunteers tonight.

Amarillo Emergency Services is organized under the APD.  It was under the Office of Emergency Management until a few years ago.

AES will present awards for Member of the Year and service awards.

AES traces its roots back to the 1956 group called Amarillo Emergency Corps, organized under the local chapter of the Red Cross, up through the “Civil Defense” organization.  They became Amarillo Emergency Service in 1964.

These are the people in the light blue uniforms with emergency lights on their personal vehicles that you see at many large accident scenes.  They direct traffic at accident scenes, help manage fireworks show traffic, and fill in however they can to assist local first responders in any conditions.  They have saved the citizens money and helped expedite police service by filling in for a marked patrol unit/officer whenever they can.
