A new addition to downtown is in the works and you can help pay it forward today by donating to the cause.
Every year on A.J. Swope’s birthday, his family and friends ask others to pay it forward.
This year, they are asking for donations to build the A.J. Swope Plaza.
“We decided this year, hey why don’t we give people an opportunity to donate to the project, which is really easy to do because the Amarillo Area Foundation has set up a fund for the Friends of A.J. Swope and we are raising money now actively and are really excited about our prospects this year,” said Wes Reeves, the chairman for the Friends of A.J. Swope Committee.
So far friends of A.J. Swope have raised about 10% of their goal.
“We are looking to raise about 2.5 million dollars to essentially build a public greenspace that will be in downtown Amarillo adjacent to the new ballpark and will include an amphitheater for music hopefully and other things. A.J. was a musician and we thought that would be really appropriate,” said Reeves.
Reeves says along with being named for Swope, the area will feature a walk of fame and first responders memorial.
“We have a really unique identity in this region and we often don’t celebrate that and this is a physical place where you can see the names of people who have made a difference in this world, and you can see A.J’s name who made a difference in so many of our lives so it is really exciting for us to finally be at the point of raising money for this.”
The privately funded plaza will be built at the corner of Southeast 8th Avenue and Lincoln Street.
