Two students from the Texas Panhandle are spending their summer working on Capitol Hill.
Most people are familiar with the public face of Representative Mac Thornberry, but what about his behind the scenes staff?
Ellis Waide is a summer intern from Perryton. He answers the phones and assists with paperwork.
“We give them the best service possible because, in the end, that’s the goal. We’re here to serve them,” said Waide.
Between his duties, the congressman also gives Waide advice.
“So working with Congressman Thornberry has been a great help in that regard in helping me figure out what I want to do with my life post college,” added Waide. “So working with this internship has definitely given me the experience I need to kind of figure out what I want to do later in life.”
Cassidy Riza, another intern, holds tours and works on reports.
Riza and Congressman Thornberry share local roots.
“Congressman Thornberry is from Clarendon so he’s kind’ve a hometown celebrity,” said Riza. “So being able to work in this office has been an awesome opportunity.”
Waide said he likes interning in Washington but says nothing is like the wide open spaces.
“I live in the country back home so I kind of miss just the emptiness and just the peace of it all,” continued Waide. “You don’t really get that peace here in D.C. because it’s always moving. Things are always going.”
The interns leave the capital just in time to return to campus.
