A few years ago, officials for Amarillo Parks and Rec realized a new need had emerged.
Many of the children in their program were going home hungry.
Karly McCutchan, the Amarillo Parks and Rec Marketing Coordinator says, “We give them what might be their only meal for the day. We help fill that gap in the summertime when the school isn’t feeding them.”
Traci Moore, who has five kids in summer program says, “They have activities, which help burn energy. Then we get help with the meals and that helps out a lot.”
So to celebrate our Founder’s Day of Caring we helped give children in need lunches at area parks.
However, we needed a lot of help for so much food.
Brandy Sanchez, KAMR Local 4’s General Manager says, “Our food sponsors today were: Pescaraz, Carino’s, Zemer’s, Spicy Mike’s, McDonald’s, and the Bivins Foundation.”
We partnered with a group that helps local children on a daily basis.
“Our summer lunch program is at 17 Parkside.” Explains McCutchan, “It’s affiliated with our recreation program and at Parkside we give out lunch to any child who signs up the day before. Any age one to 18.”
With this event happening during the summer, it helps just that much more.
McCutchan says, “There is a need. There are hungry kids in Amarillo. We want to help them get the food they need.”
This help also has a real impact on the kids.
“It’s really great, because it is hard. It’s hard with the five kids.” Explains Moore, “I have four but we recently got my niece also, so it’s a big strain. It’s just great that we can come here and do this.”
The final count is in and we were able to help 430 children get their free lunch today.
