ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A ride at the New Mexico State Fair left some people stuck hanging around 30-feet over the midway Saturday.

It happened around 2 p.m. at the ride known as “Tango,” which twists and turns passengers high in the air.

As dozens watched from the ground, the ride stalled out with nearly a dozen people on board.

“We were just in shock and praying, saying, ‘Please don’t let it happen, please like somebody, come out here and get this thing down,’” said Robert Hernandez, who recorded video of the incident.

New Mexico State Fair officials say an electrical problem caused the ride to malfunction, leaving riders hanging in twisted positions. Some riders had their backs to the ground, while others were left hanging face down.

“A few girls you can hear them up there on the right, they started getting scared, they started screaming, and we were like, ‘What the heck is going on here?’” said Hernandez.

Using a rope, ride operators had to manually pull and push the ride into its landing position.

“The ones that were facing down, those were the ones that were crying the most because they were scared,” said Hernandez.

New Mexico State Fair staff says passengers were stuck for about ten minutes before everyone got down safely.

For those watching and passengers stuck in the middle, they say it felt like a lot longer.

“I was really glad the kids made it out safe,” said Hernandez.

The New Mexico State Fair says the Tango ride only had the problem once during the fair, and that the problem was inspected and fixed shortly after. People were back riding the “Tango” that same day.

The New Mexico State Fair says each of its rides are inspected for issues daily. The ride operator also has a safety manager that travels with the crew.
