New Mexico State Police: Car Wreck Leaves Passenger Dead & Six Injured Children

A woman is dead and six children are injured after a car wreck in Eastern New Mexico.

State Police say it happened Thursday in Portales around 3 p.m. on U.S. Highway 70 at the intersection of 18th street.

Police say the initial investigation indicated a commercial vehicle was stopped for a passing train at the railroad crossing on 18th. 

When the commercial vehicle turned east onto U.S. 70, a Dodge Caravan, traveling westbound in the right-hand lane of the highway, collided with the left side of the CMV’s trailer. 

Officials say, Norma Sanchez, 51 of Clovis was the passenger in the Caravan.

Authorities say Sanchez sustained fatal injuries during the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene.  The driver and six children in the Caravan all received non-life threatening injuries. 

The driver of the CMV was uninjured.

This crash is still under investigation.
