What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?

Lots of local events can keep you busy while ringing in the new year

AMARILLO, TX - Need something to do New Year's Eve? Here are some ideas:

Hockey:

The Amarillo Bulls take on the Odessa Jackalopes during their traditional New Year's Eve game in the Amarillo Civic Center Coliseum. Purchase any red or silver section seat in advance for just $10. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.

Happy Noon Year:

Can't stay up late to usher in 2017? Consider taking your entire family to the Don Harrington Discovery Center on Saturday, December 31 for Noon Year's Eve.  It's a family celebration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with singing, party favors, a balloon drop and lots of fun. Admission is $2 for DHDC members. Non-member admission is $2 plus regular admission.

Happy Zoo Year:

Ring in 2017 with Happy Zoo Year at the Amarillo Zoo on Saturday, December 31 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The bash includes an early countdown, crafts, refreshments and a chance to join either the "I Touched a Snake" or "I Touched a Giant Roach" club. The zoo is located at NE 24th Ave. and Dumas Highway, inside Thompson Park. Happy Zoo Year is free with regular general admission.

Palo Duro Canyon:

Head to Palo Duro Canyon State Park for a couple of great ways to start 2017. Come to the Mack Dick Pavilion at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 31 and join a celebration with black-eye peas and cornbread (for good luck) and then a short hike after 12 midnight. Or, arrive a little later on January 1, 2017 for a first day sunset hike. Meet at the Scenic Overlook Parking Lot at 5 p.m. This hike will be just over a mile on easy and moderately difficult trails. In both cases, dress appropriately for the weather. Regular state park admission applies.
