Man Arrested After Bringing Guns into Local Church Now Facing Federal Charges


An Amarillo man arrested twice last week for taking loaded guns into an Amarillo church is now facing federal charges and is back in jail tonight.

A federal complaint unsealed today against Kevin Winkle, 52, charges him with possession of a firearm in a school zone.

The complaint said Winkle talked to police about recent church shootings and kept asking if he would, “make the news.”

According to documents, during a search of his home on Friday, September 14, FBI and Amarillo Police found several items, including a partially smoked marijuana cigar, and other evidence of drug use.

Winkle was arrested for carrying a loaded gun into St. Mary’s Church twice. The second time police said they found two rifles stored in violin cases in his car.
