A woman in Wheeler County woman is exposed to rabies after being bitten by a rabid skunk.
It happened on May 1 in the woman’s backyard.
According to a report released by the Texas Department of State Health Services, the woman was bitten by the skunk on her foot when she stepped onto her porch.
The skunk was euthanized and submitted to the lab for testing. Results show it tested positive for rabies.
Officials said the protocol for a situation like this is for the person to get a round of shots that help prevent the potential spread of rabies.
The medical status of the woman is unknown at this time.
