Proposed Amarillo property tax increase to be decided by voters

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — During today’s City Council Special Meeting, the Amarillo City Council proposed a tax rate increase of 22%.

The tax hike must be voted on by voters if the increase is over 3.5% and must be approved to be on the ballot by Aug 16 to make the November ballot.

If voted down the tax rate will go the voter approved $0.443 per $100 valuation.

The increase would equate to about $.480 cents per $100 valuation.

The proposed tax increase works out to 3.5% of the average total tax bill, and $5.66 for the average tax bill.

During the meeting the city council discussed that for every dollar of taxes collected for the city proposed rate:

  • AISD 45%
  • Potter County 27%
  • City 19%
  • Amarillo College 9%
  • Water District less than 1%

The average tax rate for 2020 by the 10 larger and 10 smaller cities in Texas is $0.60.

The city council will hold a public meeting Aug 10 and Aug 13 in the Council Chambers.
