As sustained rainfall and flooding conditions continue to impact homes and businesses across the High Plains, roads in some communities have been closed to traffic.

While city officials in Amarillo and Canyon, as well as in Potter and Randall Counties, continue responding to current conditions under disaster declarations, multiple roads have been closed or otherwise designated hazardous areas for community members to avoid.

As of Thursday afternoon, officials in the Amarillo area also said that closed roads and intersections with “blockades or some kind of barrier” or would soon have them included:

  • 26th and Georgia;
  • 28th and Mockingbird;
  • Paramount and Mockingbird;
  • Lynette and Mockingbird;
  • Lometa and Mockingbird;
  • Janet and Mockingbird;
  • Hobbs and Mockingbird;
  • Fleetwood and Mockingbird;
  • Hobbs and Olsen;
  • Hobbs and Western Plaza;
  • I-40 and Western Plaza;
  • I-40 and Paramount;
  • Wolflin and Virginia;
  • Duniven Circle and Church;
  • Duniven Circle and Blackburn;
  • Civic and Blackburn;
  • Virginia and Kentucky;
  • Curtis and Britain;
  • I-27 and Georgia;
  • Westhaven and Patterson;
  • Westhaven and Lenwood; and
  • I-40 and Lakeview.

Meanwhile, in the City of Fritch, a sink hole also prompted the closure of North Hoyne and West La Salle to North Robey Avenue on Thursday afternoon. People were advised to avoid the area of North Hoyne, West La Salle and the 600 block of La Salle to Robey Avenue.

As of Wednesday afternoon, officials with Curry County in New Mexico announced multiple road closures in the wake of the “torrential rains and unprecedented flooding,” including:

  • CR 3 between CR D and CR F;
  • CR L between CR 19 and CR 21;
  • CR N between CR 14 and CR 16;
  • CR 19 between CR D and CR H;
  • CR 22 between CR F and CR G;
  • CR 23 between CR H and CR I; and
  • CR 17 between NM 108 and CR C.

Officials from around the High Plains region have continued to stress that drivers remain cautious of road conditions and be away of possible delays or closures, as well as avoid driving through water-covered areas.

On Wednesday, June 6, the Curry County Road Department said a significant number of roads are damaged and potentially hazardous due to flooding.

Curry County released an updated list of road closures:

  • CR20 and CRD – Intersection
  • CR3 between CRD to CRF
  • CRL between CR19 and CR21
  • CRN between CR14 and CR16
  • CR19 between CRD and CRH
  • CR22 between CRF and CRG
  • CR23 between CRH and CRI
  • CR17 between NM108 and CRC
