The first pop-up retail location in Amarillo is officially open for business. The Shops at 800, located in the historic Levines Building at 800 S. Polk, is open and welcoming shoppers.
Pop-up retail is an innovative kind of retail that has become very popular in vibrant, urban areas. Entrepreneurial businesses can open for a short period and lease a “test” space that allows shoppers great exposure to new and innovative products but keeps the cost to the store owner very reasonable.
The first store to open in The Shops at 800 is called “Herd Wear 2”. The 200 square foot shop is a scaled-down version of the “Herd Wear Retail Store” about 40 miles east of Amarillo on U.S. 287 in Goodnight.
“We are excited to be in downtown Amarillo and look forward to being a part of the new retail shopping renaissance which the 800 S. Polk building is spearheading,” Herd Wear owner Cecil Miskin said. Miskin says shoppers get excellent opportunities that would not otherwise be available, and the retailers get to build their businesses. “It’s a win-win for everyone involved.”
“Being in such a great location, right in the heart of downtown Amarillo’s rebirth is very special,” Miskin said. Herd Wear 2 sells a variety of products made from bison ranging from hats and gloves to socks and boots.
“The Shops at 800 provide a retail experience different than anything Amarillo has seen,” said McCartt & Associates Agent, Blane Thornton. “We’re excited to give some of the most creative businesses in the area a first class, yet affordable opportunity to bring retail shopping back to downtown.”
“These shops also provide a way for the people of Amarillo to connect,” said Thornton. “The 14,000 folks who work downtown are here all day and historically have had limited shopping options,” Thornton added. “Now they have a convenient location to shop without the stress of having to drive across town.”
McCartt & Associates continues to reach out to any interested business who would like a retail location in the downtown area.
“We were very pleased and surprised at how simple and affordable the McCartt team has made this opportunity,” said Miskin. “They are genuinely working to make this successful for all – the businesses, the City, and the people downtown. We are looking forward to having more neighbors here at The Shops at 800.”
