What started as a single helicopter from one location has gone on to serve almost 20,000 patients.
LIFESTAR has been providing emergency transport for patients all across the Texas Panhandle for 25 years.
What started as a single helicopter in one location has grown into two helicopters, one aircraft, and three locations.
“The two helicopters can service a 150 mile radius from each base, which takes us up into the surrounding states bringing patients back to for care and our airplane can go from coast to coast so if there are patients that need some type of subspecialty care that is not available in the panhandle, we can take them to other states if need be,” said Stewart Jackson, the director of LIFESTAR.
Jackson says along with the expansion of their fleet, they have many specialists on their team.
“We have a primary team that can do adult, pediatric through geriatrics, we have a high-risk OB team, so we actually bring dedicated flight nurses that are specially trained to take care of critical moms to get them back to some type of care, same thing with the neo-natal intensive transport team which has also been in-service for 40 years by ground and also by air,” added Jackson.
Jackson tells us these specialists are important as the healthcare world continues to change.
“The health care industry changes, what we are noticing now over the last couple of years is our patients are sicker, it is harder for them to seek healthcare just due to the cost and the way the industry is changing so by the time they show up to their hospital, rural hospitals or clinics, they are very, very sick.”
