Iwo Jima Flag Run is on Sunday, October 14 at Palo Duro Canyon State Park.

Events:

  • Day of Registration- 8 a.m.
  • 5K and 6 Mile Flag Run- 9 a.m.
  • 1 Mile Trail Run/Walk- 10 a.m.

The run recognizes all military past and present. All proceeds will benefit “Panhandle Wounded Warriors.”

The run offers a 5k and one-mile trail run/walk but the unique 6 man flag team is designed to be a 6-mile challenge carrying the American Flag and doing a bit of a reenactment on top of a mesa that overlooks the start and finish of the race nearly 800 ft. below. The climb out of Palo Duro Canyon is a little less than 800 ft and the elevation of Mt Suribachi a little less than 600 ft.

Six-man flag teams will run together as a team. Start and finish are at the Mack Dick Pavilion. The team will run the 5K without the flag. After running the 5K instead of finishing in the parking lot of MDP they will run past the entry into the parking lot and retrieve a flag from a flag handler (all flags will be the same size and weight). They will then proceed up the road and out of the canyon. Near the top of the road, they will cut across on the CC Trail to a mesa .6 miles away that overlooks the MDP parking area below. A run organizer will be there to guide to the trail. A flag will already be flying on the mesa. Flag teams will replace that flag with their flag and return to the finish line at MDP.

Price:

  • 6 Man Team-6 Mile Flag Run $210
  • 5K Run-Adults $35
  • Students and 1 Mile- $25
