Hybrid Crops Being Tested in Amarillo

BUSHLAND– Cutting down on water usage is a main priority behind work  being done at Texas AgriLife in Bushland.

Researchers are looking into ways to plant later and save more irrigation water while growing corn.

For a study they are currently working on the are using new hybrids that take a shorter amount of time mature and also save some water.

“You try to use as little as irrigation as possible to save some irrigation water for future generations,” said Dr. Qingwu Xue, a crop stress physiologist.

Xue says another way to save water is by planting when your crop will see the most seasonal rain, which is later in the season.
