Hours Long Standoff Ends with 2 in Custody


UPDATE 7:54 P.M.:

According to APD, Aaron Brandt Welch, 24, exited the residence. 

Welch was warranted for a Probation Violation for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Assault Family/Household/Member Impeding Breath or Circulation. 

Officers said they saw a second male in the residence but he refused to exit. 

Officials said information was gained that the male who was still inside of the residence had a felony warrant and was armed with a firearm. 

We are told officers were not able to make contact with the second subject, and chemical irritant was introduced into the residence. 

At 7:40 p.m., Mario Salinas, 25, who was wanted for a Parole Warrant for Deadly Conduct, was taken into custody.

Welch and Salinas will both be booked into the Randall County Jail.

UPDATE 3:08 P.M.:

According to APD, officers were called to the 5100 block of South Bonham Street on a possible burglary in progress.

The call stated that two males armed with firearms were attempting to enter a residence.

Officers said they saw an open back door on the residence which closed as they approached.

Due to the nature of the call, the APD Critical Incident Response Team was called to assist.

At this time traffic is blocked in the 5100 block of S. Bonham and on Douglas Street from Leigh to Crockett.

You are asked to avoid the area. 

Southlawn Elementary was put on a temporary lockout, but that has since been lifted.


SWAT is on the scene right now after Amarillo Police responded to a burglary in progress near Douglas and Leigh.

Officials say that when police arrived officers saw the back door close.

A neighbor told police that there is a wanted subject in the house.

We will have more information as it becomes available.
