Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin speaks at Power of Purse in Amarillo

Heart of the High Plains

The annual Power of the Purse luncheon and purse auction kicked off this morning at the Amarillo Civic Center.

People got to bid on purses in a silent auction and listen to this year’s keynote speaker, Marlee Matlin.

Matlin lost her hearing at 18-months-old but went on to become the first deaf actor to win an Academy Award.

The money raised goes to the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health, which helps to advance science surrounding women’s health.
