Heart of The High Plains: Passion Behind The Clothes

Colorful Closets started with trash bags of clothes on their porch, then to a small office space, now the organization is in a large warehouse area. Colorful Closets helps clothe children in Amarillo that are in need.

Hanging and folding hundreds of clothing items sounds like a chore, but at Colorful Closets, it’s a passion.

“We want them to feel excited, we want them to feel hope, we want them to feel dignified and so we are going through sorting through and keeping the best of the best,” Lindsey Wing, Colorful Closets Co-Executive Director and Founder said. Wing explained that they accept new or gently used clothing items.

Going through donations takes time. Thanks to volunteers, the process is a bit easier.

“We’re real picky with what we keep so our volunteers kind of help us keep an eye out for the things that are current, age-appropriate so that we can put them on the shelves and then get them on kids,” Keely Brown, Colorful Closets Co-Executive Director and Founder said.

Volunteers from across the community help in the closet. Junior League of Amarillo member Jennifer Longbine explained, “I think people don’t always know that people need help. I think sometimes we live in our own little worlds and we don’t realize that there is so much need out there.”

Children can also volunteer at the closet. “I love having conversations with kids about it. and opening their hearts and maybe softening their hearts. Living outside their bubble and remember we’re so blessed and how can we bless others and give hope to others,” Brown said.

Shaylee Fairchild, an 8th-grade student said, “Well honestly you don’t expect what you’re going to find. And you just know that it’s going to go to a good owner who needs it.”

Another student, Gracelyn Gutierrez explained, “I like how colorful closets gives clothes to families in need and I also like that they let kids volunteer.”

Colorful Closets is currently in AISD, CISD, and surrounding areas. They have six drop off locations which can be found here. You can donate sizes infant through Adult 4X.
