Preterm Births Rising
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the nation’s preterm birth rate continues to rise.
The latest data shows preterm births increased from 9 and a half percent in 2014 to nearly 10-percent in 2016.
The upswing comes after a long period of decline.
Preemies are at a higher risk of developmental delays, chronic health problems, and even early death.
Lungs with Hep-C Are Safe for Transplant
Lungs infected with Hepatitis-C are safe for transplant.
Doctors in Canada say donor lungs from people with Hepatitis-C have been successfully transplanted into 10 patients.
Eight have already tested negative for Hepatitis-C after taking anti-viral drugs after surgery.
Experts say accepting Hepatitis-C positive donors would increase the number of available lungs by 1,000 a year in North America.
Surprising Bacteria Source in Hospital Rooms
A new study finds a surprising source of bacteria in hospital rooms.
A review of 55 cleaned rooms in a Pennsylvania hospital showed no dry erase markers and only two erasers passed inspection.
In fact, they tested at 40 times the acceptable threshold for bacteria.
Experts say this shows the importance of making sure the cleaning checklist includes all frequently touched items.
