Fertility Center Malfunction Follow-Up


(NBC News) Ovarian cancer survivor Katelynn Gurbach’s Hope of ever having a biological child was destroyed one year ago, when a cryo-tank storing her only eggs and embryos malfunctioned at University Hospitals Fertility near Cleveland. 

More than 4,000 eggs and embryos were lost at the Ohio facility and a similar but separate incident occurred at Pacific Fertility Center in San Francisco the same weekend.

These incidents exposed a gap in oversight of the fertility industry. 

An NBC News Investigation has reveled no government agency has authority over storage tanks that house eggs and embryos because tanks are not listed as medical devices.
