Federal Judge Orders Psychiatric Exam for Kevin Winkle

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) - A federal judge has ordered a psychiatric examination for the man arrested three times for bringing loaded guns into an Amarillo church.

Kevin Winkle, 52, had his initial appearance in federal court this morning.

Winkle was arrested twice on local gun charges last week and then again Monday on a federal charge.

He is accused of taking multiple loaded guns into St. Mary's on September 5 and September 9.

According to a federal complaint, Winkle had an assault rifle stored in a violin case inside the church on Sept. 5, and two assault rifles in violin cases in his vehicle on Sept. 9.

The FBI and Amarillo Police searched winkles home last week and say marijuana was found in the home.

According to a court order, he has been turned over to the custody of the attorney general's office and will be placed in a facility closest to the court for a period of at least 30 days.
