Consumer Spending Up for June

Consumer spending rose during the month of June.

The Commerce Department says sales at retailers and restaurants jumped half of a percent in June, after a 1.3 percent rise the previous month.

Overall, retail sales have risen 6.6 percent since last year, the fastest annual pace in five years.

However, inflation over the past year is also at a six-year high, primed largely by rising prices for gas, cars and medical care.

Adidas Makes Environmental Pledge

Sportswear company Adidas is pledging to use only recycled plastics, including polyester, by 2024.

Currently, polyester, which is made from plastic, makes up about 50 percent of the material in Adidas products, according to the company.

But they say the switch will save an estimated 40 tons of plastic per year.

Adidas says its spring and summer clothing lines in 2019 will contain about 41 percent recycled polyester.
