Combs & Cuts Barbershop owner C.C. Combs started the “Books for Bucks” program this April. The program encourages kids to read a book while waiting to get their hair cut or doing their cut. Combs explained, “If a kid comes in and they grab a book and they read it by themselves on the couch or in the chairs, they’re going to receive one dollar. If they read it out loud, they’re going to receive two dollars.”
Combs thought of the program in 2017 after being inspired by a couple of kids. Combs had a small chest of books and noticed that a few boys picked up the books and started reading. Combs reached out to the Delta’s to help gather more books. The Delta’s donated books and Combs built a bookshelf and the Books for Bucks program started.
“At school kids, they’re going to go and they’re going to read and learn and we had a kid who came in and he was saying well, Dad I don’t want to read right now, I read a lot at school, so for me it’s like okay, let’s do something different, let’s give them money and encourage them to read more,” Combs said.
Combs wants to keep the program growing. You can donate books or make monetary donations at the barbershop. Combs & Cuts Barbershop is located at 1003 S. Georgia St. Call (806) 242-2662 or visit their Facebook page for more information. Combs & Cuts Barbershop has been in business for 11 years.
