Canyon Aquatic Center is Right on Schedule

Plans for the the canyon aquatic center are right on schedule.

The city manager says ever since the city okayed the $6 million bond for the water park, they have been diving in to the behind the scenes work.

Canyon City Manager Randy Criswell says, “The ball is moving and it’s really cool.  It’s happening.”

A family aquatic center at Conner Park in Canyon is what city manager Randy Criswell is talking about happening, and it’s right on time.

He says the contractors are ready to get to work replacing the current pool in a matter of months.

Criswell says “They think that the construction can be done after the pool closes this coming summer, summer of 2016, everything can be ready, you know the bids can be taken and the project can be ready to go, contracts can be signed, and the day that the pool closes this coming summer, then the contract can go to work and begin construction.”

Criswell tells us it’s more important to him to have the water park make the grand opening, which is summer 2017, than keeping the pool open the whole summer, so if it needs to close early, it may.

About the economic impact the aquatic center would do for Canyon, Criswell says a study shows the pool would see around 40-thousand visitors each summer.

But he says, it’s not all about the money.

“That’s icing on the cake.  The ultimate motive is to provide a quality of life for canyon that we don’t currently have,” he says.

The current pool is 60-years-old.

He says it’s falling apart, not ADA Compliant, and it’s time for it to go.

Criswell says, “Ya know Canyon is a great place and one of the reasons for that is the fact that people, they want a lot of quality of life and I think that we provide that for them and they have spoke this time very clearly that they want this and so we’re going to give it to them.”

He says the consultants will be meeting on the site on march first to discuss the design.

The design includes basketball hoops, diving boards, more than 15-umbrella types, lazy rivers, an area for little kids and a lot more.

Criswell tells us they plan to build something that has something for everyone
