UPDATE: Suspect dead in officer-involved shooting near downtown Amarillo, driver identified

UPDATE 5/30/2019 – 

The driver of the vehicle that fled the stop and crashed in the 1900 block of South Johnson Street was identified as 23-year-old Alexis Zapata. 

Zapata was arrested for a Probation Violation warrant for Burglary out of Deaf Smith County. He was booked into the Potter County Detention Center. 

The female in the vehicle was transported to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries before being released.

Three APD officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave. This is normal protocol with any APD officer-involved shooting. 

The incident remains under investigation by the Amarillo Police Department Special Crimes Unit and the Texas Rangers.

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Amarillo Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting near downtown.

According to the Amarillo Police Department, officers tried to make a traffic stop on a vehicle at the intersection of 10th and South Johnson. That is when police said Isaac Ray Ruiz, 22, who was wanted for a Parole Violation with the original charge of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, got out of the vehicle and started running south on the 1000 block of Johnson.

Police said as Ruiz fired multiple rounds at officers as he ran. Cpl. Hilton told us officers returned fire and stuck Ruiz.

Ruiz was pronounced dead at the scene.

APD said a man and woman still in the vehicle fled from officers, crashed on Johnson and I-40, and were detained. 

Officials said no officers were injured in the incident.

This case remains under investigation by the APD Special Crimes Unit.
