AMARILLO - The Bell Street overpass at I-40 opened to traffic early this evening.
TxDOT officials say this is, "following an accelerated construction plan that began this summer on July 28th."
The bridge was completely shut down with traffic detoured to the frontage roads to help with what officials say accommodate the construction timeline.
The bridge reopened with two lanes of southbound traffic, the center turn lane, and one northbound lane.
We are told this traffic pattern will remain in place while construction of the eastbound turnaround bridge takes place, which is not part of the accelerated construction plan.
TxDOT says the Bell Street bridge reconstruction project is one of several taking place along I-40 to address aging infrastructure and to accommodate semi-truck traffic that is oversized or overweight.
As construction crews finish working in the area, travelers are reminded to slow down, pay attention in construction zones, and be aware of the safety of construction workers.
