Angel Hayden and The Canyon Lady Eagles are Going for Their Fourth Straight State Title

It would be hard to argue there is a more dominant team in Texas than the Canyon girl’s basketball team, and it may even be harder to find a better coach than Lady Eagles Jow Lombard. Who has 18 state titles under his belt. He and the Lady Eagles are coming off their third consecutive state title. And now Canyon is going for something that even they havent accomplished before a fourth straight. Head Coach Joe Lombard likes the position they are in.

“We will have to be on the top of our game to even have a chance but we have a chance. So we will give it our best shot and see what happens.”

The roster changes every year for Lombard, but the one thing that has been the same for the past three years, is current senior guard Angel Hayden. A player Lombard has loved having.

“I tell the story, but basically I have an Angel watching over me. We have an Angel on our team.”

Hayden lead Canyon in points as a freshman in their 2014 state title game, and I asked her about playing with pre game jitters playing on such a big stage as a freshman, and she admits she was a little nervous.

“It was nerve racking but after Lombard talked to me, everything was fine, I remember calming down the girls talking to me, and just being really excited after I got the nerves going away.”

Since then she certainly hasn’t looked back being named the tournament MVP as a sophomore and as a junior in both of their state title runs. Even though she has been a leader of this team for quite some time. She has embraced her senior role in their quest for number four.

“They can come to me and be like Angel I’m Scared like this happens, and I can just talk to them and be that person there for them and calm there nerves and help us win that championship.”

And make no mistake about it, even though she has been there and done it three times she still wants a fourth state championship to close out her high school basketball career.

“I know the seniors just want it so bad everyone on the teams wants it so bad and just to end your senior year with a fourth state championship would be so special to everyone.”

Hayden also talked about her relationship with Tatum Shulte, a young girl who is battling cancer, and how she draws a lot of inspirtation from here. Video below.
