(CNBC) Investigators say Dr. Lisa's Tseng's Los Angeles office was the place for people looking to get high.
At least 13 patients died while under her care. In 2015 she became the first doctor in U.S. history convicted of murder by over-prescribing.
A 2016 study by the National Safety Council found that nearly all doctors over-prescribe pain medication. It's important to educate yourself and ask lots of questions before getting that prescription filled.
"Ask how to take it so you don't take too much of it, what are the potential side effects, and most importantly, what are other alternatives," advises neurosurgeon Dr. Orly Avitzur, medical director for Consumer Reports.
The most commonly overprescribed drugs are antibiotics and highly addictive opioids.
"Once someone has been on an opioid for more than two weeks, they develop a physical dependence to it," Dr. Avitzur explains.
Most doctors are glad to address concerns, but if he or she dismisses your questions it may be time to find a new one.
